2001 News:

December 30, 2001
Tess's Birthday was yesterday. We had a low-key party here at home with the kids. Later Tess and I are going to go look for a mountain bike for her.

Yesterday, we saw Lord of the Rings. I read the books back in high school (20 years ago) and I knew even then that these movies would be made. This first movie was excellent. It was very true to the books in important matters. They did skip several things that would have confused the audience (Tom Bombadil) or slow things down (walking from The Shire to Bree). The effects were great as expected. I did notice some strange looking lighting in several special effects shots. Some of the characters would look washed out (almost black and white) in certain scenes.

My only other criticism is that the Councel of Elrond scene was too short. They should have introduced all the characters. As it is, it took me a while to figure out who was who. It would have made relationships easier for the audience to follow and would have given more weight to the scene.

While Kyle watched my putting up the Christmas tree, he said:

So when you have enough toys and you don't want Santa Clause to bring you any more toys you can start hitting your sister, right?

My new web site goes live. This site is now hosted at my home on a DSL line. It runs on a RedHat Linux platform with Apache and Tomcat. This site is implemented entirely in JSP and uses custom tag library I developed especially for it.

I drank a few bottles of my beer today. I think I used too much water, because it's a little weak. It's very drinkable though, so I don't think I'll toss it.

I stayed up late bottling beer. The beer has to sit in the bottles for another 2 weeks before I get to see how it turned out. Making beer turns out to be a lot of work.

Thanksgiving 2001
We had a low key, but very nice Thanksgiving Day. We stayed here at home at did not have any company this year. The day after Thanksgiving, we put up the tree and the rest of the Christmas decorations.

I also started brewing some beer with the beer kit that Tess gave me for my Birthday.

For my Birthday, Tess staged a fondu dinner. It was very nice. She gave me a beer making kit. I've never made beer before, so this should be interesting.

For my Birthday, Tess planned a weekend on lake Hartwell. We stayed in a very cosy cabin and watched the the Leonids meter shower early Sunday morning. It was quite a show. Saturday and Sunday we tried to fish with the kids, but the fish showed no interest.
